See Geology Trail Map for the location of these minerals at Triassic Park.

A- Amber: not a mineral, but hardened sap from trees. Amber, a translucent golden color, is fossilized sap or resin from trees. Some of the oldest known bees, ants, wasps, cockroaches, flies, and other insects have been found preserved in amber. (Not much amber is left to find)

AN- Anorthosite: Formed under extreme heat and pressure. Much of the moon is made of anorthosite.

C- Calcite - The Calcite is from Martin's Limestone (Burkholder Quarry). The Calcite formed in the cracks of the limestone. Notice the cleavage is along flat plane surfaces.

D - Diabase: The quarry here and big boulders from the quarry are diabase which was called black granite. For old pictures of the quarry see http://www.triassicparkofpa.com/history/index.htm

F - French Creek Mines: French Creek Mines minerals (Not much is left to find)

G - Grace Magnetite Mine spoils, Morgantown, PA. Bring a magnet and find magnetite which will stick to the magnet. There are about 20 tons of rocks from this mine in the parking next to the fenced in quarry. Other minerals you can find:

Magnetite

GR - Granite: There are about 20 tons of granite on top of the road going up to the top of the Geology Trail and in the mineral dump.

Amphibolite

Felspar

Pegmatite

H - Herkimer Diamonds, clear quartz crystals that people call diamonds. Large and micro crystals which form in the crevasses (Not much is left to find)

Herkimer

L - Limestone: Under the road going to the top of the Geology Trail are limestone rocks. At #3 are limestone rocks from the Beekmantown formation in the Ordovician period.

Q- Quartzite: From Martin's quarry in Honey Brook, PA. White in color. It is mainly compressed sandstone. They grind it up into fine white sand for golf courses. Some of the rocks have trace fossils of tube worm holes.

Quartzite

S - Serpentine: It is dark green in color from Martin's Limestone (Burkholder Quarry).
