Baal Stela Recreation (resin cast, about 7 1/2 by 3 inches). Baal is the storm god who controls the thunder and lightning. He holds a club (thunder) in his right hand and a spear (lightning) in his left hand. Note the spear sprouts a tree. Lightning creates a path for the rain which causes the plants to grow (Psalm 135:7). Baal has a horned helmet and two long locks of hair. He is standing with a short stripped loincloth on, in contrast to El who is usually pictured sitting in a long robe. The small statue is probably the king of Ugarit under Baal’s protection. His arms are crossed for prayer. Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal (I Kings 18) Original is at the Louvre about 1.42 meters tall by .5 meters wide. From the 15th-13th century B.C.
